Design and installation for Rinse FM

April 27, 2017

CM Acoustics was asked to create the new lighting/ceiling cloud panels for Rinse FM. The acoustic treatment was for their newly located studios in shoreditch. This was a complete renovation of the building soon to be taken over by rinse FM. Part of their operations was recording and releasing music from this new location.

Part of the early design was to create a space where acoustic treatment, such as ceiling clouds were built into the architecture of the building. This meant that treatment would recessed into a shape that was built into the ceiling boundary.

Rinse FM's studio designer wanted to ensure that both first and secondary points across the ceiling were well treated but also did not obscure lighting. With this in mind, the plan was to incorporate lighting into the ceiling panels.

The design also included a shadow gap where LED lighting would also be placed behind the panels. Careful attention had to given to the sizes of the panels, the angles of recesses and proposed shadow gap. An initial drawing was provided by Rinse FM and later drawn up in CAD by CM Acoustics.

The design was then put into production by CM Acoustics joinery department. Due to the sizes, certain compromises had to be made in regards to weight, so each panel (4 in total) needed to be properly braced to prevent any bulging over time.

Once the panel carcasses where made and the panels were upholstered, CM Acoustics had their electrician liaise with Rinse FM to ensure that first fix electrics where ready for the installation of the new ceiling clouds and lights which were to be installed by CM Acoustics. CM Acoustics was also responsible for the second fix of the lighting within the studios.

The installation took less than a day and was a success thanks to the communication between Rinse FM's studio designers and CM Acoustics project managers. This project was completed within budget and on time. The new studio's not only sound great but look great too!

Rinse is at the centre of a vast musical community — since 1994 they have broadcast uncompromising and innovative music out of East London. For more information visit http://rinse.fm
